Five reminders on the essence of strategy.

Mark Pollard hosted open office hours during the pandemic to bring strategists around the world at his place in New York. These simple points serve as a good reminder on the work desk.

Notes from a Sweathead session on Strategy with the Mighty Mark Pollard. (April 18, 2020)

  • Wisdom or insight is in the problem. Good problem statement is an insight.
  • Insights come from micro observations we make about people, feelings and behaviour. The macro view may not give you much.
  • Sometimes information is not new. It is only psychologically or socially new.
  • Empathy is a superpower and a weakness.
  • Strategy is writing good non-fiction.

Interaction over open-office hours.

A candid conversation can have more insights than a structured panel.
Sharing vulnerabilities that come with the profession and personal contexts feels human, even over remote sessions.

Bonus, from one of his recent stories to make a C.A.S.E:

Mark Pollard speaks about strategy work from a human perspective with frameworks that inspire deeper thinking.
